My progress and challenges of new techniques and projects.
Have been having a great time and lots of nostalgia as I go through my mother and mother-in-laws old embroideries and lace work. The time has come as some of them are aging and marks appearing. I have been making calico aprons embellished with various doilies and table clothes. One had such bad marks I rusted it. "What would Grandma say?"

My mixed Media day which I love. The morning is a class run at the local Art Centre and Alysn Midgley-Marsden runns a series of technique classes and heaps of ideas how to use them. She is generous and knowledge tutor. Today we dyed using dylon dyes and a much less formal approach to dyeing than those I have experienced before. Of course the other methods are needed it you wish to have more controlled results. This way is more random and exciting as to what comes out when washed and ironed. Slow learner that I am I have just realised the calendar on this programme gives American Days and that's why I can't match days and dates. However just know we are ahead of you if it really matters.
Turned out a busy day 9.00 appointment at a hospital about and hour away and we were caught on the motorway with a breakdown. We arrived about ten minutes too late to find the consultant was also caught and arrived about 20 minutes later. Mixed news they thought I had secondary cancer but can't definitively locate it, so no surgery soon but will continue me under surveillance for at least a year. Good news with the machine though- they had discovered it was a design or part fault, extended a shaft in the cutter and it was free. So will be back in business. Today is Waitangi Day or New Zealand Day here in New Zealand. The Waitangi comes from the place where the original Treaty was signed with the Maoris in 1840.
Much New Zealand law has to comply with the Treaty and all Government Departments must include acknowledgment to the Treaty. New Zealand Day was promoted a few years ago to emphasise that we are now a multinational community and February the 6th is a celebration for us all. I celebrated by starting on another UFO or as I have recently leaned (WISP )work in slow progress). I was going fine as I discovered there was far less to do than I remembered. Completed the three last triangles which needed a bit of piecing as the fabric was a bit short for the whole quilt (probably too hard basket at the time!) and was merrily sewing along when my machine packed a sad and wouldn't go. I have had no trouble with my machine and love it to bits but this problem has happened a few times so ff to the shop on Tuesday. |
