Technique Faux Weaving. What's your comment? Red, white and black? Red, white and brown? Red , black and brown? I will need more detail but just thinking.
Brown Paper backgrounds. It is sometimes better to vliesofix your brown paper to a calico of firm background to be able to add more work as you build up you art piece. However for small pieces this is not necessary. Below are somethings you can do directly onto the brown paper. Treasure Gold for highlights, Oil stick for colour or highlights or stencils. You can us purchasedstencils or handmade by stitching onto card or glueing string etc, or putting ruber bands on card. On the red is an example of a stamp made by using a glue gun. To the right is a brayer which gives you a good print but you can use your hand to press if you havent got one. I will now give you pictrures and explanations of the techniques included in the February notes. Cutting and inserting strips in blocks. Making curves. This is a very valuable technique to know. When sewng curves use a scant quarter inch seam, it helps get flatter results. Some examples of inserting curves. Now it is ready for surface work. You can stamp on it, below will be some printing done with prints made for card, glue, bought stamps. I have used ordinaty acrylics with luminosity in them. Use a brayer to ink the stamp and then use a clean brayer to press onto the paper or material. I will add some blocks I did last week. I have joined some to demonstrate the outcome but you would be best to leave you blocks as single pieces. These were all made from little bits of denim from a quilt I am making so were to hand. Use what you have, whatever size you want, it doesnt matter if the are all different sizes, if you dont use your ruler they will all be different shapes that's great. Have fun.
This is where on the first of the month I will publish the challenges for 2020 Art Quilts.
I will also publish on the Kiwiquilters once but these will be a reference point if you forget and a cummulative record for me and you. I will publish all the work you share in the gallery for the same reason. You post on Kiwi quilters and after comments etc I will transfer work to the gallery. How to finish the quilt? I found as new way to face Art Quilts and decided to try it out. I traditionally use grossgrain and while it makes a beautiful finish this method is much more simple. First picture is a corner piece covered with two 2 1/2" fold strips not full length. The second picture is with the facing and corners turned out to the back and ready for hand stitching. The corners make a place to put a hanging rod for your quilt.
I got the requirments on Monday 4th March New Zealand time. What a challenge Abecede ..... Full explanation was to use words, text etc in a quilt. I decided to try and use orphan blocks this time round. Duly selected some Christmas blocks and after consideration the work Gifting came to me. I gessoed a strip of pieced fabrics which would come to the measurements of the four blocks I had selected. I choose some green and red felt to make the letters, By the time I hadcut out the green letters I realised that red felt overlays would be incredibly thin. Next idea was to stitch gold beads on with red thread. This took an incredibly long timeasthe felt had a mind of it own. This accomplished I quilted the blockand attached the letters. |
